Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need. In one app. In one place. All goals and strategies, always at hand.
How does pension accrual work as a self-employed person?
As a zzp'er there is no employer arranging it for you, so you build up in the third pillar yourself. You do that with a lijfrente account: you contribute within your jaarruimte and deduct that amount from your taxable income.
At Vive you open such an account yourself, set your own contribution, and your money is invested automatically according to a strategy that suits your age and retirement date. Read more: building an individual pension.
What is the advantage of a pension scheme for the self-employed at Vive?
Every lijfrente provider offers the same tax advantage; the difference lies in costs and execution. At Vive:
- No transaction costs and no deposit fees, so your full contribution is invested.
- A personal strategy based on an ALM model, rather than a standard model portfolio.
- Full flexibility in what you contribute, including free pausing.
- Everything in one app, with insight into your accrual and projection.

What is the difference between pension investing as a self-employed person and saving?
Two differences. First the return: saved money grows with interest, invested money with market returns, which are generally higher over the long term but can also fall.
Second, and often more important for zzp'ers: with pension investing within your jaarruimte your contribution is deductible and your capital sits outside box 3. With ordinary saving it does not. In return, you can't access it before your retirement date. Read pension investing versus pension saving.
What happens to my self-employed lijfrente on death?
The full capital built up goes to your next of kin. As a zzp'er you have no partner pension through an employer, so this is often the only thing left for them.
In the accrual phase your next of kin can buy a nabestaandenlijfrente with it, giving them a periodic benefit. In the payout phase the payments continue until the end of the agreed period. Read what a nabestaandenlijfrente is.
Is pension investing deductible for self-employed persons?
Yes. If you stay within your jaarruimte and reserveringsruimte, you deduct your contribution from your taxable income in box 1, under 'uitgaven voor inkomensvoorzieningen'.
You deduct at your bracket rate, up to 49.50% in 2026. In addition, the capital you build does not fall into box 3 during the accrual phase. You only pay income tax once the benefit starts. Calculate with the jaarruimte calculator.
How much jaarruimte do I have for my lijfrente as a self-employed person?
Your jaarruimte is 30% of your premiegrondslag: last year's business profit (after entrepreneur allowances) minus the AOW-franchise of €19,172. If you build no pension elsewhere, factor A is zero and you keep the full room.
In 2026 the jaarruimte is capped at €35,589, at a qualifying income of €137,800 or more. Didn't use it fully in earlier years? You can still catch up to 10 years back via your reserveringsruimte. Work out your room with the jaarruimte calculator.
How can I calculate my self-employed pension?
Two calculations matter. The jaarruimte calculator shows how much you may contribute tax-efficiently this year. The pension calculator shows what a given monthly contribution could grow to by your retirement date.
Contributed too little in earlier years? Also calculate your reserveringsruimte. Stuck? Get in touch via support.
