What is the AEX-index?

The AEX-index (Amsterdam Exchanges-index) is an important stock market index that reflects the performance of the most traded Dutch shares on Euronext. This index functions as the main barometer of the Dutch stock market. It is a price index, which means that dividends are not included in the calculations. The AEX-index is calculated continuously and is reviewed annually on the third Friday of March at the close of trading.

Historically, the index consisted of 25 funds, but nowadays the index contains fourteen funds. The composition of the index is determined by the market capitalization of the freely tradable shares ('free float'). Companies with a lower free float or price can be transferred to the AEX Midkap Index.

Example: In May 2024, the AEX-index closed above 900 points for the first time, which represented a record high.
