What is expectant?

A term used to describe a market situation in which prices fluctuate little and trading activity is low. This often happens when investors are reluctant to take new positions, for example, pending important economic figures, policy decisions, or other market developments. The market then remains relatively stable with small price movements and little trade.

Example: "The Amsterdam stock exchange is expected to open virtually flat on Monday. The other European stock markets will also start the new trading week cautiously."
