What is itinerant trade?

Ambulant trade refers to the sale of consumer goods to private individuals that takes place from a market stall, sales vehicle, pitch on the public highway, or from a vessel. This form of trade, also called street vending, falls under retail trade and can often be found at markets or other public locations. Ambulant trade can also take place by vendors who visit people at their homes, which is known as canvassing or colportage. This type of trade is distinguished from traditional retail trade because it does not take place from fixed shop premises.
