What is share premium dividend?

A form of dividend distribution whereby the dividend is paid from a company's share premium reserve instead of from the profit reserves. This means that the company rewards shareholders without drawing on the operating profit, but by making use of the extra capital reserves that were previously built up above the nominal value of the shares (the share premium reserve).
