What are alternative investments?

Alternative investments are investment products whose returns are not directly related to the price movements of traditional investments in equity or bond markets.

Examples include investments in commodities, real estate, agricultural land, private equity funds, hedge funds, or infrastructure.

Managers of alternative investment products often have more freedom to invest according to their own style and insight, in contrast to traditional investment funds which often remain close to a self-selected benchmark.
